What is SMPS? It’s the shorten form of switching mode power supply? What is the main purpose of switching mode power supply? What is the SMPS?
Switching power supply is the use of electronic switching devices such as transistors, FET, SCR thyristor, etc., through the control circuit make electronic switching devices constantly "on" and "off", then the electronic switch performs pulse modulation on the input voltage, to achieve DC / AC, DC / DC voltage conversion, and adjustable output voltage and automatic regulation. 
Switching power supply characteristics 
Switching power supply is generally composed of pulse width modulation (PWM) control IC and MOSFET. With the development and innovation of power electronics technology, switching power supply is mainly considered as small, lightweight and efficient features are widely used to almost all of the electronic equipment, you would discover that how important it is!
Switching power supply classification 
According to the switching device in the circuit connected type, the switching power supply can be divided into a series of switching power supply, parallel switching power supply, transformer switching power supply. the transformer switching power supply can be further divided into: push-pull, half-bridge, full bridge and other; according to the transformer excitation and output voltage phase, can be divided into: forward, flyback,single-and double-excited and so on.
Switching power supply works 
Switching power supply has three operating modes: frequency, pulse width fixed mode, frequency fixed, pulse width variable mode, frequency, pulse width variable mode. The former operating mode is mostly used for DC / AC inverter power supply, or DC / DC voltage conversion; the latter two operating modes used for switching power supply. 
Switching power supply output voltage also has three working modes: direct output voltage mode, the average output voltage mode, amplitude output voltage mode. Similarly, the former work frequently for a DC / AC inverter power supply, or DC / DC voltage conversion; the latter two kinds of work moslty for switching power supply.
